Obesity is a significant problem for today's American children. The Northern California Cancer Center, for instance, calculates that more than 23 million children and teenagers are overweight and that this epidemic is growing. Sharma (2006) recommends that nutrition behaviors should focus on increased fruit and vegetable consumption, decreased fat intake, decreased consumption of carbonated drinks, adequate consumption of water and restricting portion sizes. This recommendation is appropriate for use in the general public particularly since children model what they see around them. If adults practice these recommendations too, children are more apt to model and less apt to become obese.
Further, after analyzing and comparing at least two (2) other health promotion pamphlets, present a comparison and contrast as to why you have deemed the two as favorable/appropriate or unfavorable/inappropriate for use in the current and general health care population.
The two pamphlets are by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (2006) and another by the same organization....
The essay refers to them as NSPL (1) and NSPL (2). I found NSPL (1) more attractive in that it spoke to the victim directly, was psychologically appealing and urgent, cogent and forceful and urgent in correspondence to the situation. The other pamphlet, in contrast, seemed to focus around the organization rather than the victim and ended off -- and this seemed a tertiary point -- by addressing contacts to victim. It was less clear, more overwhelming and less direct.
Assess the following elements of each pamphlet in your project:
• Layout appeal
The flap page of NSPL (1) was colored in the soothing colors of green and blue and spoke to the psychological concerns of the victim: "When it seems like there is no hope, lonely? Trapped? Helpless? Alone? There is help" and then directed the individual to the organization. A portion of the page provided succinct information about the organization just enough that was necessary for the victim or another to contact it in a move that may be life-threatening and immediate. The other portion of the page bulleted direct points of "Suicide warning signs." The layout was direct and to the point effective for a life-and-death situation where one has no time or will to read details.
